Overview

Location

The site is located at 2209 Soldiers Settlement Road, approximately seven km south of the township of Somerton, and approximately 25km west of Tamworth, in the Tamworth Regional Council Local Government Area.

Grid connection.

The 132kV Tamworth to Gunnedah transmission line crosses over the southern part of the project site. A new substation will be built on site as part of the project, and a connection to the existing transmission line will be made from the new substation. The solar farm has been sized to utilize the capacity in the existing line and there will be no requirement to upgrade the line as a result of the project.

Statistics

Some facts and figures about the solar farm are listed below:

    • There will be approximately 210,000 panels. These will cover an area of about 165 Ha, but there is about 5 metres of space between each of the rows.
    • Sheep may be used for grazing the land.
    • The panels will track the sun from east to west so that the panels are always facing towards the sun. Panels do not reflect the sun, they are designed to absorb the sun.
    • A battery storage facility will form part of the project and will be located adjacent to the substation.
    • The existing farm house will operate as the solar farm’s site office.
    • The solar farm will produce enough energy to power 30,000 homes.
