Initial impressions of the city of Delft and the Netherlands as a whole are just how many bikes there are. They are everywhere across the city outside cafes or restaurants it is so drastically different than the US in that regard. The city itself seemed very lively with people always eating at restaurants or in these giant squares talking and chatting about their days. The European style of dinner is also very different. The dinner usually takes longer and is way more structured. For example, if you order appetizers you then have to ask the waiter/waitress to start/to bring out the main dish which usually in America they bring it out whenever it is ready. The city center itself is way quieter with the lack of loud cars and other city noises. Biking was also very stressful for the first couple of rides getting used to the signaling and yielding which is very different than the states. Most of the time in the states bikes have to yield to everything and are basically treated like a car. Here bikes have a lot more priority in the traffic pyramid. Most of the time cars have to yield to bikes and pedestrians and bikes and pedestrians basically share space or pedestrians yield to the bikes. Very cool and eye-opening first day looking forward to what is to come.
