Hatfield High School Original Research

Our Home Base

This program brings high school students to Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, OR to explore the diverse world of marine research. Students design and conduct original research projects inspired by their own interests, while supported by mentors from the HMSC community.

Our Mission

Conducting research is an important part of any science student’s education. However, students typically don't have an opportunity to conduct original research until they are undergraduates. This experience is equally if not more important for high school students whose own identities as scientists are in development.  Our mission is to make the world of ocean research more accessible, so science may benefit from new ideas and perspectives!

Our Game Plan

This project has 3 components: Explore, Experiment, and Present. In the first phase, students travel to HMSC to learn more about issues the marine world is facing today, and experiment using different research techniques. In the second phase, groups design original research projects and connect with mentors to guide them through the process of collecting and analyzing data. Finally, students will create scientific research posters and present their findings at a science expo!
