Experiment

What does science look like while still it's a work in progress?

So many whiteboards full of ideas...

Work time in the Guin Library at Hatfield-- a cozy space for conducting background research, brainstorming logistics, and learning how to use equipment before taking it to the field.

Hunting for shore crabs in the rocky intertidal zone just steps outside the Hatfield Visitor's Center.  These crabs are destined to be subjects of a behavior study.

Teaming up with Innovation Lab Engineer Drummond to 3D print shapes out of different plastics. Which one will hold up better after being submerged in saltwater? We had to wait 6 weeks to find out...

Building, deploying, and analyzing the results from a tidal energy potential measurement device. Maybe the King Tides can supply energy for our future!

Would native plants like old man's beard be able to absorb oil out of the ocean following an oil spill? Cash and Kyler are going to find out, but first it's going to get messy.

When the sun comes out, there's always time for a quick break.

STUDENT ARTWORK

Over the course of this project, some incredible artwork was created as part of the story of student research.

Artist's Statement: This work is important to me, because I like building pieces of art work with different colors of wood. This work is connected to Oregon because some of the woods I used in this project are old growth fir and aspen which are native tree species in Oregon. I hope people will discover a new avenue of creative expression.
