Entomology is a very important field of study. Even though insects are tiny and seemingly insignificant, they play an important role in nature and in society. This is why it’s very important for scientists to monitor and control the population of insect colonies.
The study of the red fire ant has made a big impact of society. They are an invasive species in America so learning how to monitor there population along with studying there behavior has lead to the ability to control their environmental damages. This is very important for keeping a healthy ecosystem along with protecting people from the ants painful stings.
Even though ants are considered a nuisance for a lot of people, they are fascinating creatures. The way that they are able to work together in a way that seems like their minds are connected has inspired scientists. This inspiration has lead to physicist and mathematicians creating the idea behind swarm theory or swarm intelligence. The general idea is to implement the system into artificial intelligence and use it to solve very complex optimization problems. Problems that might take humans a significant amount of time would hopefully take AI a fraction of that. (Weston 2001).
