Have you ever read an article that mentions insect population and wonder “how do they know the population, it’s not like scientists can count every single insect”? Well the answer is quite simple, they use math! In fact, the relationship between mathematics and entomology is bigger then you might initially think. Along with mathematicians using differential equations to model insect populations, studying insect colonies had lead to break throughs in multiple fields of mathematics. One great example of this is with the insect Solenopsis invicta more commonly known as the fire ant. They are an invasive species in the United States and it is very importnat for scientists to be able to monitor their population.
