Panther Power 9 SLOs and Rubrics

and an SLO and Rubric for Student Reflection and Metacognition

These SLOs and rubrics are meant to be resources for you to use as you see fit.  They are ready to be used as is, you may also want to revise them to better fit your specific classes, or you may have an idea for a different SLO regarding a focus point in your specific classes which is fine too.  

It is not mandatory that you use one of these SLOs or rubrics for your SLO.

Student Reflection and Metacognition

Sample SLO: 

By the end of the 2023-2024 school year, 100% of students in _____ Period __________ class will meet or exceed proficiency on the student reflection and metacognition learning target, based on a collaboratively developed 4-point rubric, or will demonstrate growth of 1 or more levels on said rubric. 

OHS Panther Power 9, Reading 1: 

Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text .


Student-friendly, alternative wording for OHS PP9, Reading 1: 

I can read carefully, so I understand what this author’s writing is trying to tell me.  I can also make my own logical inferences (judgments) about what I’m reading, and I can provide evidence from the reading to support my conclusions.


Sample SLO:

By the end of the 2023-24 school year, 100% of students in 3rd period English 10 will meet or exceed the Reading 1 Panther Power 9 Standard -- comprehending text, making logical inferences from text, and citing evidence from text to support logical conclusions -- based on a collaboratively developed 4-point rubric, or demonstrate growth of 1 or more levels on each criterion of said rubric.



OHS Panther Power 9, Reading 2: 

Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key and supporting details and ideas.


Student-friendly, alternative wording for OHS PP9, Reading 2: 

I can determine the central ideas/themes of the text I’m reading, and I can analyze those themes, asking questions, and comparing and contrasting those themes to my own life and to the world around me. I can also summarize the key details the author uses to communicate those themes.


Sample SLO:

By the end of the 2023-24 school year, 100% of students in 7th period U.S. History will meet or exceed the Reading 2 Panther Power 9 Standard -- determine central ideas/themes from texts and analyze them; summarize key details -- based on a collaboratively developed 4-point rubric, or demonstrate growth of 1 or more levels on each criterion of said rubric.  



OHS Panther Power 9, Writing 1: 

Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.


Student-friendly, alternative wording for OHS PP9, Writing 1: 

I can write specific arguments to support my claims.  In addition, to support my arguments, I can provide relevant and sufficient evidence from the text(s) we’re reading and/or from my own research and/or from my experiences.  Furthermore, in my own words, I can use valid reasoning to clearly explain why the evidence I chose directly supports my arguments.


Sample SLO:

By the end of the 2023-24 school year, 100% of students in 8th period Physics will meet or exceed the Writing 1 Panther Power 9 Standard -- write arguments to support claims using valid reasoning and relevant, sufficient evidence -- based on a collaboratively developed 4-point rubric, or demonstrate growth of 1 or more levels on each criterion of said rubric.



OHS Panther Power 9, Speaking and Listening 1 : 

I can prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing ideas clearly and persuasively.

Sample SLO:

By the end of the 2023-24 school year, 100% of students in 9th period Spanish 2 will meet or exceed the Speaking and Listening 1 Panther Power 9 Standard -- prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners-- based on a collaboratively developed 4-point rubric, or demonstrate growth of 1 or more levels on each criterion of said rubric.



OHS Panther Power 9, Language 4: 

(This standard could also be paired in one SLO with Language Standard 6.)

Determine or clarify the meanings of unknown or multiple-meaning words and phrases by using context clues, analyzing meaningful word parts, and consulting general and specialized reference materials as appropriate.


Student-friendly, alternative wording for OHS PP9, Language 4: 

When I encounter a word which is unknown to me, I can choose flexibly from a range of strategies* which will enable me to add this new word to my vocabulary.  


* A sample of these strategies includes examining the beginning, middle and/or ending of the new word; examining how someone else is using the word in writing or speaking; examining the part of speech options for this new word; and comparing my initial thoughts on the new word’s possible part of speech and possible meaning(s) with one or more definitions for this new word in a dictionary. 


Sample SLO:

By the end of the 2023-24 school year, 100% of students in 8th period Study Skills will meet or exceed the Language 4 Panther Power 9 Standard -- adding new words to my vocabulary, using a range of strategies -- based on a collaboratively developed 4-point rubric, or demonstrate growth of 1 or more levels on said rubric.



OHS Panther Power 9, Language 6: 

(This standard could also be paired in one SLO with Language Standard 4.)

Acquire and use accurately a range of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases* sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the college and career readiness level; demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.


Student-friendly, alternative wording for OHS PP9, Language 6: 

I can learn, and use correctly, a range of words I’ll need to understand in order to be successful at Oregon High School.  I can also learn, and use correctly, a range of words I’ll need to understand to be successful in college and/or in my career.  Independently, I can determine which new words are most important for me to understand, and I can add them to my vocabulary without assistance.


* Examples of general academic words could be words like inference, empathy, and analysis.  Examples of domain-specific words would depend on the classes you’re currently taking and on the career paths you choose following high school.  For example, what new words do you need to learn to be successful in your science classes or your math classes in high school or in college? In addition, what new words would you need to learn if you choose to become a firefighter, a nurse, or a chef? An engineer, a teacher, or a lawyer?  


Sample SLO:

By the end of the 2023-24 school year, 100% of students in 9th period Algebra 1 will meet or exceed the Language 6 Panther Power 9 Standard -- acquire and use accurately a range of general academic and domain-specific words -- based on a collaboratively developed 4-point rubric, or demonstrate growth of 1 or more levels on said rubric.
