Sutherlin FFA members engage in a veterinary project to end the school year, prepare for the future
June 2021
The last day of finals had come to an end and summer vacation had officially started for the students of Sutherlin High School. While most rushed home to start their break, more than 15 students in the Sutherlin Agricultural Science & Technology program stayed behind in the lamb barn to help with the last project this spring. These members were helping to artificially inseminate 15 ewes that the FFA chapter had purchased this spring.

CURRENT VOC ED CLASS: Certified Nursing Assistant
WHY I’M TAKING THE CLASS: I decided to take this class because growing up I had to take care of my grandmother at a young age and she always told me that I would make a great CNA. I looked into the program and ever since then, I wanted to be a CNA so I can help others get better.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT: In this class, I am constantly learning no matter what I am doing. I am learning so much about what it takes to be a great CNA and my teacher is so awesome about teaching the class. She teaches me everything that I need to know.
WHAT I’D LIKE THE COMMUNITY TO KNOW: What I would like the community to know is that I am very hard working, kind, patient, but most of all I am part of this community and I want others to know that they can trust me that I can provide the best care that I absolutely can.
MY FUTURE: My future dream is to stay in the nursing field as I grow older, whether it would be as a Nursing Assistant or as a X-ray Technician. Nursing is my calling and I hope that I can make absolutely the best out of all my learning experiences that I can.

WHY I’M TAKING THE CLASS: I would earn 12 professional technical credits through Treasure Valley Community College, and a scholarship if I take ag for four years.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT: I have learned a lot of career skills as well as leadership skills.
WHAT I’D LIKE THE COMMUNITY TO KNOW: I would recommend taking ag freshman year because students will earn three credits each year for free. It’s a great opportunity.
MY FUTURE: I plan to get my bachelor’s in engineering and get a great job so I can be financially stable.

You've heard it before. Career and Technical Education is the "secret sauce." It drives higher graduation rates and attendance. What makes up the secret sauce?

Willamette Career Academy is set to open in Fall 2021, offering career and technical education programs in cosmetology, health services, and diesel technology to high school students. Additional courses in construction technology, computer science/information technology, and manufacturing technology will be added in Fall 2022.
"The Willamette Career Academy will serve as a regional hub for students in Marion, Polk, and Yamhill counties," said Michael Clark, the director of communications for the Willamette Education Service District. "It will provide students with the opportunity to explore and engage in learning high-demand skills in CTE courses."
On Thursday, the Oregon House Committee on Education discussed three bills related to making public the price of course materials before the start of the term, prominently displaying the price and breakdown of administratively-controlled mandatory fees and clarifying the role of student government in its authority and autonomy over its budget.
“This bill is so simple,” said Democratic Rep. Jeff Reardon, one of the chief sponsors for the bill, during a House Education Committee meeting Thursday. “It’s basically saying students are about ready to make a big financial decision — they’re going to sign up for a class. They’re going to buy some books and other materials — and we’re just saying that they should have the price of those materials readily available.”
Six students from Eagle Point High School, armed with torque wrenches, power drills, and metal saws, installed wrought iron railings in front of the mill’s main entrance Thursday afternoon. It's just a small sliver of the estimated $3.1 million effort to restore the structure to its original glory following a 2015 Christmas Day fire.
After taking measurements on site, the students designed the rails on Autodesk Inventor, a computer-aided design application. Parker Edwards, a senior, said it was crucial to nail the math right from the start to determine how long each piece needed to be and how many pieces they’d need.
