Oregon Charter Academy's student newspaper, The Current, is run by high school and middle school students in the school's Newspaper Club. Issues are released on a monthly basis throughout the school year.
The Current aims to provide high-quality, unbiased journalism covering topics relevant to the Oregon Charter Academy community and beyond. Newspaper Club members prioritize teamwork and constructive criticism in a creative, collaborative environment.

Meet our staff
Mr. Yanowitz is an ORCA advisory teacher who also teaches Journalism. He is licensed to teach ELA and Social Studies. He grew up near Boston, attended Beloit College in Wisconsin and has worked at Oregon Charter Academy since 2008, more or less. He enjoys reading, cooking and advising The Current.

Lily Dixon is a sophomore in her fourth year at ORCA. In her free time you can find her obsessing over F1 race strategies, traveling the world, and being a dedicated American Football fan. Aside from The Current, she’s Student Government’s Newsletter Committee Leader and a co-founder of Photography & Film club.

Avery is a junior at ORCA, and has been attending since Kindergarten. In her free time she likes watching movies, reading books, and driving. She is looking forward to being on The Current this year.

Annalaina Yip (Anna-lay-na) or Aamy is a senior at ORCA who has been inspired by her teachers to keep on writing. Ever since she was inspired by her 7th grade teacher and beyond, she has built a structure of open mindedness and a habit of working hard. As a result, she has pushed herself to the point where she started writing her very first novel based on an idea that surfaced nine years ago. But, her writing career didn't go to a halt there, ever since she joined The Current to strengthen her love of writing. Aside from writing, she also developed a love for music. She is a proud writer and has gotten many inspirations from not only her teachers and her family, but also her special friend. She cares for all issues that are identified in this world as needing to be heard and addressed with a new and confident voice. She hopes that someday this work that she is building up within school will eventually overflow into society.

Riley has been at ORCA since Kindergarten and is currently a sophomore. She is a co-leader for ORCA's Scrub Club, and in her free time, she runs track and cross country. When she's not running or working on school, she's reading or talking with her best friend.

Adelaide Kersey, mostly known as Adele or Wilder, is a mountain biker, a violinist, and an actor with a lot of time on her hands. When she's not lecturing her friends on the importance of victorian hats, you can find her daydreaming about brigantines, thinking up wild fantasies, and eating a satanic amount of chocolate.

Grace Choi is a sophomore at Oregon Charter Academy, and this is her third year in The Current. She is also the Student Government Social Media Coordinator, NJHS President, and Biomimicry Design Club Founder. In her free time, Grace enjoys watching documentaries, listening to R&B, and spending time with her friends.

Arabella is an 8th grader and has been going to ORCA for 9 years. She is a part of Yearbook, Broadcasting, and NJHS club, as well as Student Government. In her free time, you can find Bella drawing, watching baseball, and playing soccer.
Lyla Mohamed, affectionately known as Lulu, is a passionate freshman at ORCA with a love for reading and writing that has been evident from a young age. Her educational journey began at the tender age of 4 at a Montessori school, where she quicky developed a keen interest in literacy. From learning to read and write, her obsession with storytelling took root early on. Even as a preschooler, Lyla was not only creating short stories but also ambitiously selling them during her free time.
A few clubs she as joined this year include: The newspaper club, yearbook, and NHS, and she is excited to continue down these new chapters in her life.
This year, Lyla joined the Current to embark on a new adventure, eager to further hone her writing skills and experience the vibrant community. She is enthusiastic about the opportunities to grow as a writer and explore new narratives. She is always excited to meet new people and exchange ideas.

Lux Reames is a junior at ORCA who just started his first year in online school. He has been a n active reader and writer since the early age of 5 years old when he started their education at Clear Lake Elementary school. Where his journey began straight into literacy and leadership; from growing ahead of the average learning every year and being placed into advanced courses age couldn’t stop them from growing far ahead.
This year embarks a new set of experiences for him with joining 57% of the clubs offered at ORCA, which include: The Newspaper club (The Current), Yearbook, Breakfast Club 2.0, Chess Club, Gamers ‘R Us, Music Club, Pens and Prose Club, Poetry Out Loud, The Book Thieves, Mathmatica, Photography & Film, and NHS.
He joined The Current this year to do more with their writing skills, even though they’re writing 2 books at once.

Lily Jacobs is a freshman and this is her second year at ORCA! She loves to read and is in the student government as a Student Senator! She enjoys going on walks and playing the violin, her favorite thing to do is go to the library to get books! She is taking French and her favorite class is Honors Algebra 1.
Taylor Byrne has been at ORCA for 8 years. She is a junior and now runs The Waves: Literary Magazine. In her free time, she writes stories and poetry, reads all things sci-fi and fantasy, plays video games, draws, and scrapbooks. With her writing journey beginning in second grade, she has grown from short stories to a yet-to-be-published children's book series and young adult novel. This year is Taylor's first year with The Current, and she is excited to begin a new writing expedition.

Zavonna Coppernoll is a 7th grader and this is her 3rd year at ORCA! She loves writing/reading in her free time and to add on her favorite hobby is horseback riding. She has 2 horses and lives on a small farm. She also has a passion for guitar, this is her first year starting the Newspaper club and is excited to start writing!

Abbi Dilley-Gumm has been at ORCA for three years and this is her second year at The Current. She is a sophomore and is this year's co-leader for ORCA's Pens & Prose club. In her free time, Abbi enjoys writing (well, okay, more like typing on Google Docs), reading, crafting, doll-collecting, listening to her favorite music on Spotify, and watching Minecraft-style animated music videos on YouTube.

Emma Davis is an eight grade student at ORCA. She is a member of the National Junior Honor's society and a former member of ORCA's student government. She loves travel, music, dance, volunteering, studying, schoolwork, and babysitting. She loves to write and also writes a personal newspaper for her family.
Chelsia Henry (Chels-see-a) is a sophomore at ORCA who has been inspired to start writing by some of her favorite authors. Ever since she was in 7th grade Chelsia has been writing in many different styles and topics, she hopes to grow into more styles and topics. She has built a passion for writing since, chelsia has wrote scripts for her drama club, songs, and stories from different cultures. Other than writing she also loves to read books, listen to music, travel, paint, dance, voice act, and hang out with her friends Lily and Leesy.

Tyvin Suda is a 6th grader at ORCA. He loves playing with his two cats, and he enjoys hot cocoa with 2-3 (if small 10-12) marshmallows. During his free time he likes to go on walks with his brother and play with his drones and RC cars. Tyvin's favorite classes are Math, Humanities and Science. He enjoys these classes because he can learn new things in them like thermal energy, percents and new words.
Elu Brunoe is a 7th grader and has been in ORCA for 8 years. She loves to sew, play video games, watch cartoons, read, mostly comics, and sometimes watch horror movies. Some other things she adores are sharks, bears, and smiley faces. Elu is also the owner of a feisty Chiweenie and elderly Jack Russel chihuahua mix. Elu is excited to contribute to the Newspaper Club.
