Gap Year

A gap year is "a semester or year of experiential learning, typically taken after high school and prior to career or postsecondary education, in order to deepen one's practical, professional and personal awareness." It is a gap between two experiences...which means that there's a plan before, during, and after. Resouces for gap years include:

• Americorps - Works with local and national partners to tap the power of the American people to tackle our country's most pressing challenges.

• City Year - Join the community and address civic challenges through service. 

• Travel! It's a great time to take a break and see the world...just have a plan for when you return and are ready to tackle what's next. HelpX connects travelers with hosts all over the world looking for short-stay volunteers in exchange for room and board. 

• GapYear Association - a resource for current or past 'gappers' with suggested programs for students and educators. 

• NOLS - National Outdoor Leadership School
