About Alumni Weekends
Launched in 2023, Alumni Weekends were created by the Surge Alumni Impact Team to bring alumni back together in cities where Surge fellowship programming is no longer active. These weekends are designed to reconnect alumni, deepen relationships, and build on the collective impact already rooted in each city.
Grounded in the values and structure of the Surge Fellowship, Alumni Weekends are two-day, city-based convenings that create space for alumni to grow as leaders, strengthen community, and activate their shared commitment to transforming education.
Alumni Weekends are more than a space for alumni to gather; they are a catalyst, helping to expand capacity, coalition building, cross-cohort collaboration, and sustained local impact.
Program Timeline
Alumni Weekends are offered every other year in cities without an active Surge fellowship program.
In alternating years, alumni can engage through the National Surge Convening or apply for Mini Grants to lead their own local initiatives.
In years when Alumni Weekends are scheduled, participating cities will be notified at the beginning of the year with confirmed dates and details.
What To Expect
Each weekend is intentionally designed to reflect the unique needs and landscape of the host city, while staying rooted in Surge’s core experiences. Alumni engage in powerful moments like Soul Circle, Leadership Stories, and peer-led sessions, all facilitated by fellow alumni.
Friday Evening
Surge-style networking (“Sip & Surge”)
Community connection activities
Leadership Story or Fireside Chat
Saturday
Alumni Panel
Asset Mapping Breakout Sessions
Wellness Activity
Soul Circle
Speakers & Facilitators
Alumni Weekends are led by alumni, for alumni.
Ahead of each event, selected cities will be invited to nominate or express interest in serving as speakers and facilitators. This is an opportunity for alumni to share their leadership, experiences, and insights with their local community.
After the Weekend
The experience doesn’t end when the weekend does.
Following each Alumni Weekend, alumni are invited to share feedback to help shape future experiences. Then, 3–6 months later, the Alumni Impact Team hosts a quick check-in with attendees to reflect on progress, reconnect, and continue building toward shared goals.
These touchpoints are designed to sustain momentum and ensure that the ideas, relationships, and commitments sparked during the weekend continue to grow into lasting, systemic impact within each city.
