Prior Knowledge and Questions

The students shared what they know and want to know about government systems.

Human Rights Tree

In order to help the students better understand the central idea, the students brainstormed examples of human rights. They added their ideas to the leaves of the tree.

Human Rights Reflection

The students reflected on the prompt, "What is a human right? Give examples."

President Research- Notes

Students researched about a U.S. president and took notes about their early life, before presidency, during presidency, and fun facts.

"Wheel of Knowledge"

The students used their research notes to create a "wheel of knowledge" to visually showcase their information.

President Report

The students also created a president report to tie in writing skills. They presented their information to the class.

Types of Government Sort

The students learned that not all countries have a democracy like we do in the U.S. In groups, they worked to match the descriptions with each type of government.

3 Branches of Government Chart

This chart helped students compare and contrast the three branches of our government.

Summative Assessment

The students worked in groups to create a system of government for a "deserted island." They then showcased their government on a poster.

Summative Assessment (2021)

This year, the students made bigger posters for their summative assessments. Students then did a "museum walk" and gave each other feedback on sticky notes.

Peer Feedback

Students gave each other feedback on sticky notes on their summative assessments.

Student Action

After a discussion about what happens when/if a president breaks the law, one student researched all about the Watergate Scandal at home and brought his research to school to share with classmates.
