Special Operations Teams train for and respond to low frequency/high risk events requiring technical expertise. Team members perform these assignments in addition to normal fire and EMS roles.
Our Technical Rescue Teams are trained for Confined Space Rescues, High Angle Rescues and Water Rescues. This 36 member team is spread across three battalions. In 2025, Technical Rescue Teams added 4 new members and elevated capabilities through rigorous, hands-on trainings. Teams conducted onsite trainings at Evergy Power Plant, mastering the complexities of high-angle and confined space rescues. Additionally, teams conducted specialized water rescue trainings at Worlds of Fun's Fury of the Nile and practical boat operations trainings on the Missouri River. These real world trainings ensure that, regardless of terrain or environment, our technicians are prepared to handle the call!

Our 34 member Hazardous Materials Team are UASI and MARC Regional Response Teams. In 2025, we responded to 3 Kansas State Fire Marshal deployments. These included an ammonia leak at the Osawatomie water treatment plant, a mercury spill in Leavenworth, Kansas and a propane pipeline leak in Mclouth, Kansas. Additionally, we deployed to Cass County, Missouri to assist our Missouri UASI partners with an ammonia leak resulting from a traffic accident.
Closer to home our teams:
-Answered 17 investigation calls
-Completed 8 radiation scans of fireworks displays
-Responded to a chlorine leak at a swimming pool and a significant natural gas leak at Corporate Woods.
Team members also conducted joint trainings with the Overland Park Police Explosive Ordnance Team, FBI, DEA, BNSF, CST and the Olathe Fire Department. All of these trainings improve inter-agency coordination and operational awareness, keeping our teams ready to respond to complex events in our region.

Our 24 member Wildland Firefighting Team is primarily focused in the southern, more rural portion of our response area. Team members train to address fires involving large, fuel rich areas of habitat with limited water availability. These occur typically in off-road, remote locations.
Team members possess NWCG trainings S-130, S-190 and L-180. Additionally, members must pass a physical fitness pack test. In 2025, our team also completed the Kansas Forest Service Intermediate Fire Behavior training.
In 2025, we again assisted the Overland Park Arboretum with a 48-acre prairie grass burn. This serves as a live, dynamic fire training exercise for our team and helps the Arboretum maintain healthy native vegetative areas.
