Our Media Services Division is responsible for both internal and external communications. We strive to provide transparency, share safety education, information and highlight some of the amazing interactions we have with our communities.
We understand that the traditional media is a conduit to the people we serve. We maintain good working relationships with our media partners, knowing that the stories they tell can help inform, educate and ultimately further our mission.
Producing our own messaging is a crucial part of our communications strategy. From sharing urgent safety bulletins to community outreach, we leverage a variety of social media networks to maximize our audience.
Whether telling stories on our own or with our media partners, we focus on the human element. We exist to help people. This is the litmus test for everything we do. It shows in the way our responders connect with our communities. You can see what we mean by watching some of our notable stories from 2025.
Each year we host a day for kids with special needs/developmental disabilities and their families at our Fire Training Center. Together with our police department, neighboring fire departments and community partners, we provide a day of fun, fellowship and learning. Check out this year's event!
We work to maintain strong relationships with our media partners. We're also able to leverage these relationships to help us get important stories told. For instance, after a fire involving a lithium-ion battery, we worked with our media partners at KMBC-TV to produce a story promoting lithium battery safety messages. This segment was seen by more than 90-thousand people!
We understand that the media is a conduit to the people we serve. In order to provide transparency and reinforce fire safety messaging, we often provide scene video and responder interviews from our Media Services Division. We shared video from one house fire with our partners at WDAF-TV to help promote a smoke alarm success story. Thanks to their help, our smoke alarm safety messages were seen by more than 150,000 people!
Additionally, we're often called on by our media partners to act as subject matter experts. For example, during a cold snap, we were asked to explain the dangers of icy cold water and how we rescue people who have fallen through the ice. Media call us because they know we'll be responsive and do our best to assist. It's all part of our mission to provide safety education for the communities we serve.
Besides working with our media partners, we also produce our own media. We even host an OverlandParkFD Youtube channel. This helps us share our safety and educational videos. We also use these tools to inform and inspire. This video from our Annual Awards and Recognition Ceremony highlights milestones from 2025 and captures the passion with which our responders serve.
We also use our OverlandParkFD X , OverlandParkFD Instagram and Overland Park Fire Department Facebook to alert citizens to important information and share good news stories. During the January blizzard when the ER Staff at Advent was without dinner, our crews raided their pantry, cooked meals and delivered them to the hospital workers. The next day, after responding to a sudden cardiac arrest call for a person shoveling their driveway, crews transported the patient and then finished shoveling the driveway. We took to our social media channels to share these good news stories, because we're proud of our people's professionalism and especially their compassion.
Firefighter Jeremy Hunnicutt made sure that every child who wanted to spray a fire hose at our open house event got the chance to do so. Not only did he help them aim at the target, he made sure they had a smile on their face by the time they finished.
This report is dedicated to the men and women of the Overland Park Fire Department who serve our community every day with great professionalism and great compassion.
We're always looking for amazing people to join our team and help serve our mission. If you want to know more about employment opportunities with the Overland Park Fire Department, visit us at JoinOPFD .
