Resources for Adult Learning Theory
Standards for Professional Learning offer educators the latest knowledge and insights to design, implement, and sustain high-quality professional learning.
Standards lead to environments in which all educators and students have access to powerful learning.
Knowles’ Adult Learning Theory (andragogy) explains how adults learn differently than children and emphasizes that adult learners are self-directed, goal-oriented, and bring prior experiences that shape new learning. It highlights that effective adult learning is most impactful when it is relevant, problem-centered, and immediately applicable to real-world contexts. The theory also stresses the importance of learner autonomy, practical application, and opportunities for reflection and collaboration in professional learning environments.
