Learning Outcomes enhanced by topic specific breakouts:
Participants will gain the understanding and knowledge to...
Explain literacy development through a model that begins with oral language.
Build stronger Early Learning (4-year-old) environments with oral language assessment and data analysis protocols (within MTSS).
Examine early literacy instructional resources and protocols to ensure they address both sides of the Simple View of Reading.
Identify actionable steps for building eco-systems and instruction that are rich in language development.
Session Description:
Literacy, along with all learning and life skills, rests on a foundation in oral language, yet this critical domain is often underemphasized in early learning systems / MTSS frameworks. This session will equip and empower educators, MTSS teams, SLPs, and leaders to enhance systemic literacy protocols by understanding and leveraging the value of early oral language screening and instruction. Participants will learn how oral language skills shape lifelong learning and literacy outcomes, why early assessment and analysis matter, and how to design instruction that aligns with both language and code-focused components of reading development. Through real-world local and national examples and practical strategies, attendees will leave with the tools to enhance early literacy systems, communicate the “why” behind oral language screening, and take actionable steps to implement instruction that accelerates language growth for every learner.

Session Description:
Teachers Can’t Do It Alone: Mobilizing Families and Communities to Grow Language Beyond the Classroom
Improving children’s reading outcomes demands strong language and knowledge skills, but schools alone don’t have time to do all that skill building. So how can schools support children’s extra dosage of playful skill-building, beyond the school day?
Joan and MaryKate will present on their “it takes a village” model, creating realistic and productive school/family partnership programs that support reading development, age 3 to grade 3. You’ll see how the research points all schools in this direction, hear what they learned from implementing a real-world program designed to engage caregivers and support teachers, and feel how structured collaboration could lower pressure on educators and help families understand their playful role in the learning-to-read process.
Whether you’re a coach, administrator, or classroom teacher, you’ll walk away with strategies to motivate all the adults in a child’s life to become active partners in reading development. This is more than planning family outreach—it’s finding a way to activate the community for lasting impact.

Session Description: Language By Ear, Mouth, Eye, and Hand: Connecting Oral Language and Composition
The Not So Simple View of Writing (Berninger & Winn, 2006) is the theoretical model that should guide oral and written instructional practices in the classroom. Composition is a mirror of students’ oral language abilities. They need to automatize their skills orally before they express their ideas by hand. Participants will learn that explicit instruction in both oral language and syntactic structures is crucial for developing written expression. The writing process is a recursive structure we can use to support writing production. Participants will leave the session with practical application approaches that can be used in the classroom tomorrow.
