“Reading Under the Lights”- If your district has a sports stadium with big lights, host an event where parents and students come and either bring their favorite books or supply books for families to read with each other under the stadium lights. A book could be sent home with families, or even a bookmark with reading tips for parents. Stadium style food could be offered.
“Cultural Storytelling Night”- Our communities have stories to share, whether your district is closely tied to tribal traditions or you have elders or leaders in your community with stories to share, this event brings your unique community together for a night of shared history and connection. This promotes oral language and listening skills for students, as well as deepens their background knowledge in their specific community. A meal could be shared, and/or a related book could be given out to attending students. This could also take place during the school day with invitations for parent involvement.
