Doing democracy is hard work. Texting strangers is its own brand of difficult: we're putting ourselves out there in a way not dissimilar to door knocking or phone banking- all-in emotionally for a candidate and the blue wave, while opening ourselves up to listen to a voter's feelings and potentially responding in a vulnerable way as a strategic approach for connecting with the voter. Texting also has unique challenges: voters feel particularly emboldened to spew vitriol from the other side of a screen that they might tamp down in face-to-face interactions.
