WHAT IS DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY?

Young people with depression describe having negative thoughts about themselves, the people around them or their environment, and the future. These thoughts are often inaccurate or unhelpful

Young people with an anxiety condition often describe an inability to stop thinking, and that their thoughts are often unwanted and intrusive. They can find it hard to focus on anything other than their worries.


WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

  • Trouble falling or staying asleep, waking up still tired after a full nights sleep
  • Feeling teary or upset most of the time
  • Restlessness or feeling 'on edge'
  • Loss of interst in previously enjoyable activities
  • Trouble starting and completing assignments at school or Uni
  • Forgetfulness, loss of concentration, inability to focus
  • Withdrawal from firnds and loved ones
  • Loss of appetite/extreme appetite, weight gain or loss
  • Tense muscles, muscle soreness
  • Unexplained illness, physically unwell


WHAT CAN YOU DO?

    • Talk to an adult you trust - e.g. parent, family doctor, teacher, school counsellor or chaplain
    • Try not to isolate yourself - it makes it worse
    • Keep healthy - moderate exercise and healthy eating
