Understanding Themes

In this unit, students draw on a repertoire of ways for reading closely, noticing how story elements interact, understanding how different authors develop the same theme, and comparing and contrasting texts that develop a similar theme. Students will work in book clubs to practice their skills as readers and learn to build a collaborative classroom environment. As a writing connection, students will use what they learn from reading realistic fiction to write their own personal narratives.

RL.5.3 - I can compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story using specific details in the text.

RL.5.5 - I can explain how parts of a story fit together to provide the overall structure of the text.
RL.5.9 - I can compare and contrast themes in stories of the same genre.

W.5.3 - I can write narratives to develop real experiences using effective technique, descriptive language, and clear event sequences.
