Post-learning: Please ensure that you keep really good and detailed reflective journals. What I will be looking for is not for the quantity of your thoughts, but quality, which is evidence of reflexivity. Best reflective journals are ones where you jot down ideas/thoughts daily. Below are some areas and questions that may help you and that focus on key themes such as the dichotomy of control, effort, fairness, empathy, ethics, equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI):
What aspects of today's supervision were within my control, and what aspects were beyond it? How did I manage those elements?
How did I balance guiding the undergraduate students while allowing them autonomy in their research process?
What challenges did I face that I could not control, and how did I respond to them? What did I learn from this experience?
Did I put in the necessary effort to support the undergraduate students today? How could I have improved my engagement or support?
How did I encourage the students to put in their best effort, and how did I recognize their progress?
What actions or strategies did I use to motivate students when they seemed less engaged or discouraged?
Was I fair in distributing my time, attention, and resources among the students and my own research needs? How did I ensure fairness?
Did I provide feedback or guidance in a manner that was impartial and objective? If not, what biases may have influenced my decisions?
How did I manage any conflicts or disagreements, ensuring all students felt heard and treated equitably?
How did I show empathy and understanding towards the students' challenges and struggles today?
Were there moments where I could have been more empathetic or supportive? How might I improve my emotional intelligence as a supervisor?
How did I ensure that my feedback was both constructive and sensitive to the student's feelings and learning needs?
Did I encounter any ethical dilemmas during supervision today? How did I navigate these situations?
Did I reinforce the importance of ethical research practices to the students, and how did I model ethical behaviour myself?
How did I ensure that my supervision upheld the principles of integrity and respect in the research process?
How did I ensure that my supervision practices today were inclusive and supportive?
Were there moments when I could have been more mindful of diversity in terms of perspectives, needs, or learning styles?
What strategies did I use to create an equitable environment?
Did I address any unconscious biases I might have had? If so, how did I reflect on or challenge those biases?
How did I promote a culture of inclusion and respect within the research team, and how can I continue to foster an inclusive environment?
