About the Course
Welcome to our Research Supervision Training Course, designed to equip graduate students with essential skills and knowledge for effective supervision of undergraduate research projects. Our course provides a comprehensive learning experience that blends hands-on supervision with theoretical and practical components, ensuring participants are well-prepared for their roles as Research Tutors.
Course Objectives
Our program aims to:
Equip Graduate Students: Provide graduate students with the competencies (skills, knowledge, and attitudes) necessary to supervise undergraduate research projects effectively under the guidance of a faculty member.
Prepare for Milestones: Ensure graduate students are ready to support significant milestones in the undergraduate research practicum.
Facilitate Discussion and Feedback: Offer a platform for discussing lessons learned and receiving constructive feedback.
Course Structure
Supervision Component: Graduate students will supervise undergraduate students for 2-3 hours each week.
Online Component: Monthly 2-hour online meetings/modules will support the supervision experience with theoretical knowledge and practical insights.
Course Content
Our course is divided into six modules, each focusing on different aspects of research supervision:
Introduction to Research Supervision and Project Management: Understand the roles, responsibilities, and ethical considerations in research supervision, and learn about time management and setting research milestones.
Information Literacy in Research Supervision: Guide students in effective literature search strategies, citation practices, and academic databases. [SKIP THIS YEAR]
Communication Skills as a General Competency: Develop professional communication skills, including teamwork, conflict resolution, and writing effective reports.
Critical Thinking in Research Supervision: Part 1. Foster critical thinking skills and encourage analytical and reflective practices in research.
Critical Thinking in Research Supervision: Part 2. Selected topics.
Reflective Practice and Continuous Improvement in Supervision: Develop a reflective approach to supervision and strategies for continuous improvement.
