Code.org for Pre/Emerging Readers

Code.org has a series of free online coding lessons for pre & emerging readers. While not a true coding environment at the pre/reader level, the Code.org activities are well-scaffolded thinking activities and have good supports for teachers.

Pre-Reader Express immerses the youngest learners into a full course to learn the starting concepts of coding. Starting there doesn’t necessarily need to be by age or grade level. More challenging coding can be found naturally progressing through the above courses.

Introduction to Code.org for Pre/Emerging Readers

The Code.org lessons have scaffolded coding activities that build skills and coding concepts with thinking activities. A few Pre-Reader Express lessons allow choice such as Lesson 9.9: Drawing Gardens with Loops.

Once students have finished the lessons, they can create their own ideas in the Pre-reader Labs:

These projects can be shared and remixed like Scratch projects. Note that concurrent events are not easy in these environments. (Concurrent events start in grade 2).
