OVERVIEW OF THE MODULE:

In this ELA module students will learn about people, problems or ideas by investigating traditional literature. They will learn how characters, settings, and events contribute to my interpretation of theme. Understanding the theme of the story will help students understand different perspectives and cultures. Exploring the techniques used by authors of traditional literature will help them to make their own personal narratives more engaging.

THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • develop an understanding of the human experience by making connections to characters, problems, and ideas in traditional literature from different cultures (e.g. folktales, legends, fantasy, fables, tall tales).

  • summarize and learn to determine theme from details in the text.

  • compare/contrast the treatment of similar themes and topics (e.g. opposition of good and evil) and patterns of events (e.g. the quest).

  • describe in depth the story elements of character, setting, and plot drawing on specific details in the text by noticing words characters use, tone of voice, and emotional cues in authors’ use of dialogue.

  • write a narrative about real life or imagined experiences including characteristics of traditional literature, where appropriate.

  • investigate use of commas, quotation marks, and other punctuation in dialogue.

  • continue to support comprehension through the development of foundational skills related to grade level accuracy, fluency, and word study.
