College Kickstart is a data-driven program designed to support second-semester high school seniors who are preparing for—or considering—a college pathway. The program focuses on strengthening executive functioning skills, enhancing college readiness, and introducing students to the rigor of college-level coursework.
Through collaboration between High School Transition Coordinators and Western Technical College faculty, students participate in classes that offer both high school and college credit, helping them build the skills and confidence needed for a successful transition to higher education.
The College Kickstart program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to help students develop the academic, organizational, and personal skills needed for success in college. Coursework and activities may include:
Time Management and Organization – Building effective habits for balancing college and personal responsibilities.
Technology Skills – Using Microsoft Suite and navigating college portals for coursework and communication.
Communication Skills – Developing confidence in both written (email) and in-person interactions with college instructors and staff.
College Financial Literacy – Understanding the basics of paying for college and managing related responsibilities.
Academic Skills – Strengthening active reading, study strategies, and the ethical use of AI in college coursework.
Accessibility and Support Services – Learning how to utilize campus resources, including access and support services.
Career and College Exploration – Conducting career research and aligning interests with potential academic pathways.
Campus Life and Independence – Becoming comfortable in a college environment and cultivating independence as a college student.
