Who are we? What's important to us? What do we do?
OMSI respects, values and celebrates the unique attributes, characteristics and perspectives that make each person who they are. We believe that we will be successful in accomplishing our mission and vision when we seek out and respond to diversity of participation, thought and action.
We will work to dismantle barriers to equity and access to the experiences OMSI provides and to create welcoming environments and conditions where all people can reach their full potential. We lead with race.
OMSI Core Values: Learning, Creativity, Integrity, Sustainability
2-3 Cooks per site. Cooks usually work February - early November
6-8 Instructors per site. Short season (Spring-only) and Long season (Full-season Feb-Oct) positions usually available
2 supervisors per site; each with a slightly different focus (Outdoor School or Summer Camp)
Usually work January - November
8-12 Counselors per site. Usually work June - August
Training and certifications are different for each position. Supervisors and Managers plan, facilitate, and evaluate trainings, and we sub-contract certification courses and other professional development opportunities. In general, trainings are paid, and certification courses are not, however we do provide food, housing, and opportunity for most.
Spring training usually starts in late February. Summer training usually falls on the second week of June.
Cooks mostly get on-the-job training and need an Oregon Food Handler Card. See the Cooks page for details.
Training for Instructors and Supervisors is comprehensive; there are several certifications needed on top of our 10-day paid OMSI training. See the Outdoor Science Instructor and/or Supervisor page for details.
Counselors have about a week of paid training in June, usually the week before summer camp starts and need an Oregon Food Handler Card, and Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR.
We typically take 10 days; several days onsite at our respective camps, a few days all together at one of the camps, and a day or two in Portland. Cooks get a chance to practice their skills, learn about the kitchen and equipment, practice menu planning, food ordering, inventory, and stock rotation, as well as participate in some of the onsite training sessions.
Our summer training is usually 5 or 6 days long during the second week of June. Instructors will mentor and work alongside a team of camp counselors. We cover a variety of topics in a short amount of time!
Each position has different requirements (See specific Positions), and here's one that everyone needs:
Oregon Food Handler Card - (Usually around $10) These are available online. It's a requirement in Oregon to work around food, and only takes a short time to complete.
