David Mayhew's theory is that all Members of Congress are single-minded seekers of reelection. Members of Congress achieve this goal of reelection through advertising, position taking, and credit claiming.
Advertising is all about name recognition. Although Dan Bishop is not running for reelection this year; he is running for North Carolina's attorney general. In theory, he is still pushing for name recognition. Examples of advertising include newsletters, visiting constituents, and non-political speeches or interviews. Dan does have a newsletter that used to come out about every week but it has not been updated for around a year. His most recent newsletter, linked here, came out on March 17, 2023. Most of the interviews Dan does have to do with some sort of a political issue. He is rarely seen doing something just to get his name out there lately, which is surprising considering he is running for an attorney general seat that has been held by Democrats since the late 1800s.
Position Taking is when a Member of Congress states their stance on an issue involving politics. Dan has been seen taking stances on many things on his X (twitter) and Instagram, during floor speeches, and in interviews. On X (twitter) and Instagram he often posts on the current government and issues he feels strongly about (shown to the right and below).
Credit claiming is when a Member of Congress claims that they are the reason something is getting done. Another way of thinking about it is Congressmen bragging about their achievements. Examples of what could be credit claiming include sponsoring bills, service on a particular committee, obtaining earmarks, and the use of a newsletter. Dan has cosponsored 34 bills; the most recent being the Combating Transnational Repression Act of 2024. There is also a lot of credit claiming in Dan's press releases, which let people know what he has been voting for. Dan has also been seen credit claiming on his social media where he talks about what he is and is not voting for.
