In the 2022 election, Dan won with over double the votes of his opponent, Scott Huffman (D). This was Huffman's first time running for election since 2018, when he ran in the Democratic primary and only received 23.0% of the vote. It does not look like Huffman is running again in this election cycle. During the 2022 election, Dan received more votes in every county than in the 2020 election. This is an example of the incumbency advantage and the correlation with constituency approval.
In August of 2023, Dan announced that he would be retiring from Congress to run for North Carolina's attorney general. In an interview he stated, "It is a particular time to reinforce support for prosecutors and frontline law enforcement officers." The race for attorney general is expected to be extremely competitive as incumbent Attorney General Josh Stein (D), is running for reelection. Historically democrats have controlled the attorney general seat in North Carolina; no republican has been elected to this position since the late 1800s.The district Dan is leaving may look slightly different due to the redistricting. In April of 2023, the North Carolina Supreme Court overturned its own past ruling that said that partisan gerrymandering is illegal. In September, 2022, Dan spoke out about voter suppression in North Carolina seen in the link here.
Dan has worked closely with Donald Trump in the past, not only during his first election, but also in approving of Trump's agenda. The video below shows Trump speaking at one of Bishop's campaign rallies. This link shows a tally of how often members of Congress voted with or against Trump when he was president.
Bishop tries his best to promote the Republican agenda and discusses primary issues such as border control and the economy. Here is a link to Bishop discussing what is happening at the border. It is difficult to tell if Bishop is changing his approach to legislation or if he is continuing as he normally would because the issues listed on his platforms have remained the same. In Bishop's announcement of running for attorney general he made it a point that his constituents and the people of North Carolina know him, and know what he believes in. The makes it reasonable to believe that he has not changed his legislative style.
