Dear Students,
Welcome to English III, a class in which you will get to explore our country’s rich literary tradition and debate some of the most enduring questions of American society. Over the next few months, we will grow together as a community of writers and thinkers. We will learn to scrutinize sources; question, explore, and defend our core beliefs; and become more engaged members of our communities. We will empower ourselves by examining the rules, limitations, and power of the English language.
In my experience, the English classroom is at its best when you, the student, take risks. What do I mean by that? By now, I’m sure you’ve realized that your English classrooms are very different than your math classrooms, where there will almost always be one correct answer. The very idea that there will be more than one way to (correctly) approach, construct, and analyze an essay or text is both wonderful, and yes, at times, frustrating. In this class, your voice matters. I want you to take chances in your writings and when you contribute to class and group discussions, because I truly want to hear what you have to say. The insights that you and your classmates can bring to discussions are foundational to our collective learning.
I look forward to seeing how, together, we can grow as readers, writers, and thinkers.
All the best,
Mrs. Strobel
