Ways to Help Your Child At Home With Reading
**Reading**
*Practice sight words nightly.
*Read with your child. Ask questions about the story while reading. You can ask your child questions about what is being read, or have them ask you. Either way they’re forced to pay attention to the story.
*Have your child write about the story they just read. It could be their favorite part, a new ending, important details, etc. Anything to help them make a connection with the story.
*Choose rhyming books to read with your child/have them read to you. Make up new rhyming sentences to go along with the story.
*Make predictable books available (ex: Bear series books by Eric Carle, There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a ____ series) to help build confidence and fluency.
*Use manipulatives to spell and read sight words (magnet letters, letter beads, word wheels)
*Listen to stories being read to get a better understanding of expression and fluency.
*Have your child retell the story in their own words, sequencing the events of the story correctly.
*Pick sentences from the story, and cover up words. Have your child use clues from the other words or pictures to fill in the missing word(s).
*Utilize technology. Search online or the app store for 1st grade reading /sight word games.
*Go to the library and let your child pick out books that are of interest to them.
