Newcomer Academies
Newcomer Academies serve students who are new to the United States. Newcomers spend their first year building basic English communication skills in classes while working on core courses. Newcomer classes provide intensive English instruction for newcomers, focusing on vocabulary, grammar development and English literacy skills.
English-Language learning students and their parents/guardians are provided with appropriate programs, instruction, and opportunities to attend schools and programs staffed with highly qualified, specially trained professionals.
Enrollment at a Newcomer Academy
For newcomers whose home school is a Newcomer Academy, students enroll directly at their school site. Students slated to transfer to a Newcomer Academy should enroll through English Learner Services.
All standard enrollment procedures should be completed, plus the Newcomer Intake Tasks:
Complete all standard enrollment forms
Set up transportation as needed
Age check (age on September 1 of the current school year determines student grade)
Student receives Newcomer Packet and relevant tutorials (IC login, bus and uniform information)
