Comprehensive Counseling programs include the following:
Instruction or "Classroom Counseling": School counselor guides and teaches the district approved curriculum to all students. OKCPS uses Second Step curriculum to promote Social-Emotional learning for all elementary students. Teachers may request other topics as needed such as bullying prevention, anger management, friendship, etc.
Individual short-term Counseling/Advisement: Some students needs more of this short-term one-on-one counseling during times of transition, heightened stress, critical change or other situations (for example, being new to the school, grandparent just passes away, loss of pet, conflict with classmates, academic struggles, test anxiety, etc.) Students can request to see the counselor or be referred by his/her teachers or parents.
School counselors do not provide therapy or long-term counseling in schools. However, school counselor can refer and share resources if longer counseling or mental health support is needed.
Group Counseling: Students with similar needs will be invited to participate in small group counseling. It is another form of instruction offered in a small group setting. The groups are offered based on needs for various concerns such as death, divorce, anger, self-esteem, peer relations, etc. Parents, teachers, school staff can refer the students.
Immediate Student Support: Temporarily assist a student directly, using one-on-one support in the classroom, hallway or in other area. We all have bad days and a break or a pause in a different environment can turn a day around. This occurs as needed.
Community Resources and Referrals: Areas of support include food, clothing, school supplies, medical/dental, housing information, and outside counseling.
If you have question or concerns about the counseling services, please notify the school office at 405-587-7100 or email kkacers@okcps.org.
