K-12 Writing Composition

The new Kentucky Academic Standards, released for the 19-20 school year contains many references to digital publication. The standards listed below are from the composition strand of the new Reading and Writing Standards. This strand of the Reading and Writing standards is included in the ILP framework because a digital portfolio is a great platform for students to showcase proficiency in the area of digital composition. While K-2 students are not asked to collect evidence specifically for an ILP, those students should still be exposed to digital composition as described below. Source: Kentucky Academic Standards


Guiding Principle For Composition

Students will use digital resources to create and publish products as well as to interact and collaborate with others.

K-2: With guidance and support from adults, explore a variety of digital resources to create and publish products, including in collaboration with peers.

3: With some guidance and support from adults, use digital resources to create and publish products as well as to interact and collaborate with others.

4: With some guidance and support from adults, use digital resources to create and publish products as well as to interact and collaborate with others.

5: With limited guidance and support from adults, use digital resources to create and publish products as well as to interact and collaborate with others.

6-8: Use digital resources to create and publish products as well as to interact and collaborate with others; cite sources using MLA or APA format.

9-12: Use digital resources to create, publish and update individual or shared products, taking advantage of technology’s capacity to link to other information and to display information flexibly and dynamically. Use a variety of formats to cite sources.
