Students in Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade receive weekly talent development lessons. Lessons are roughly 30 minutes in length and focus on various critical thinking skills. Students practice:
Divergent Thinking
Convergent Thinking
Visual Thinking
Evaluative Thinking
Each week, students practice thinking like one of the six thinking characters:
Dudley the Detective is a German shepherd who uses clues to find the one correct solution to the problem
Isabel the Inventor is a crafty squirrel who sees the world a little differently. Sometimes she is building a machine to make life easier and sometimes she is flexing her artistic muscle and adding a special design to a basic object
Sybil the Scientist enjoys categorizing and grouping items together. Her special skill is all about identifying parts of things and placing them into the proper group
Max the Magician is not only a math thinker, he is also a wonderful visual thinker. He is able to rotate and flip shapes in his mind to fit them into the proper spot in a larger shape. He also does a great job continuing challenging patterns and puzzles involving shapes, colors, and numbers
Jordan the Judge is a wise owl who helps students think through the best options. Oftentimes, a pros and cons list is helpful and other times a matrix is important to determine what is best for everyone involved
Yolanda the Yarnspinner weaves wonderful tales and stories. She enjoys writing comic strips, clever jokes, suspenseful cliffhangers...you name it, she can do it! She likes to add colorful detail to her writing and wants the reader to stay engrossed
My lessons are created using multiple resources. The Primary Education Thinking Skills (PETS) books are the foundation of my program. The lessons build upon each other from book to book, making it easy to adjust and adapt for different grade levels.
I also modify lesson ideas from Big Ideas For Little Scholars, Math Equals Love, Steve Wyborney, and many more. These resources, paired with suggestions from other teachers around the world and from my gifted education courses have made the talent development program what it is today. I am always looking for innovative and fresh ideas, so please feel free to contact me (mosquera@ogschool.org) at any time! I'd love to connect.
