Our Vision
The Library Media Program at Oelwein Community Schools is committed to helping students achieve success in school, be effective users of information and become lifelong learners.
The Oelwein Library Media Curriculum is based on American Association of School Libraries Skill Indicators, Common Core requirements, Oelwein Library Grade Level Benchmarks and National Educational Technology Standards.
Our goal for student learning is to provide activities and lessons so that students can use the library and its resources to help them in their educational needs to be lifelong learners and productive citizens both in the classroom and in their daily lives.
Collection Development
The Oelwein CSD is the home to four libraries housed at Little Husky Learning Center, Wings Park Elementary, the Middle School, and the High School. All of these libraries contain educational materials that are chosen to meet the needs of various user groups, including students, staff, and teachers. All libraries emphasize equitable access to resources regardless of age, grade level, or background. Library collections are aligned with the overall educational goals and mission of our school district. Our collections strive to be relevant and diverse to support the teaching, learning, and research of our patrons.
Many factors are used when evaluating and selecting library materials. Criteria used include information accuracy, relevance to the curriculum, cultural diversity, and age-appropriateness. Our libraries strive to include enrich and support curriculum being taught in classrooms, as well as meeting the personal interests and learning goals of our students.
All district libraries are subject to weeding and deselection of materials. This weeding includes the removal of outdated, damaged, or irrelevant materials from the district's collection. Regular weeding ensures our schools' collection remains current and useful.
Our libraries strive to contain a collection that emphasizes intellectual freedom by supporting a wide range of viewpoints and topics. We work to provide a global perspective for our students, promoting diversity including materials by authors and illustrators of all cultures.
