Our Mission

We are a diverse multidisciplinary team focused on public internet safety. Our experiences, skillsets, and knowledge inside and outside the classroom has empowered us to draw upon a wealth of information to tackle real world issues in cybersecurity. Having a diversified background in accounting, international relations, cybersecurity, machine learning, coding, art, and networking our team honed in on the problem with public Wi-Fi safety.

We used a mixed design thinking process to empathize with end users and businesses alike to create a human centered design. As predominantly tech savvy and multidisciplinary individuals, our team was at a unique vantage point having used public Wi-Fi at some point or knowing someone who has, and the potential consequences those actions entail. We were not only able to describe the nature of the problem but we could also empathize. Our approach to creating a human centered design involved field research including people from all backgrounds and ages, and compiling that information to narrow our focus and tackle the problem head on through readily available modalities.

Free public Wi-Fi presents a unique challenge to end users and businesses. How safe is it? Is this the official business's Wi-Fi? Who else might eavesdropping on end users? What user information is exposed when using Wi-Fi? Is there a way to make public Wi-Fi safer that's also easy for end users to implement? These are just some of the questions we sought to address when creating PopLock. Since, the humble inception of PopLock our team has been collaboratively focused on addressing public Wi-Fi safety and ensuring a safer user experience for all.
