The ODU history department and Monarch Humanities Internship Academy helped make this internship and workplace experience possible. The class is a special topics course and is not commonly offered, so it is a rare treat to get the opportunity to take it. The instructor for the course was Dr. Tracy Barnett, a visiting professor with lots of experience in exhibition development and construction.Â
Each person in the class was brought into an internship through the MHIA and was given the title of "Exhibit Development Intern", we were all responsible for collaboratively deciding on an exhibit theme, title, summary, visual design, and writing for the exhibit.
Since this internship experience was contained within a class, our daily responsibilities were pretty minor and easy to keep up with. We were expected to keep up with our portion of the exhibit, engage with class discussions concerning the exhibit, and contribute unique ideas. These responsibilities were contained within class time and reasonable homework time.
The professor for this class, Dr. Barnett, made sure to teach us and train us in proper writing for a museum exhibit, factoring in things like accessibility and visual appeal. We had easy access to her not only in class but over email. She was always available to help and answer questions. We also got additional training from ODU's MHIA and e-portfolio studio to help us construct an e-portfolio.
