One of the biggest concerns when planning for college is how to pay for the cost. The OHS Counseling Center has information to help you navigate the world of financial aid, scholarships, and loans. Below are resources to help you get started. Counselors are available to answer questions and provide assistance with future planning.
Community Scholarships
Explore resources for local scholarships you may be eligible for. Make sure you read the scholarship eligibility criteria carefully before applying. We suggest students revisit scholarship opportunities every 1-2 weeks for new scholarship postings and upcoming deadlines.
Missouri Scholarship Search Sites
National Scholarship Search Sites
College/University Scholarships
Most colleges offer merit scholarships and need-based scholarships. As you apply to colleges, seniors are encouraged to research each college in which they are interested to determine all possible scholarship opportunities and application deadlines (typically found on the institution’s Admissions or Financial Aid website). * Report all scholarship awards you are offered to Mrs. Whitaker, OHS School Counselor.
Financial Aid Information
WHAT IS THE FAFSA?
The FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. There are 3 types of federal student aid that a student is applying for when completing the application: Pell Grants; student loans; and work study.
PARENT INFORMATIONAL MEETING
OHS hosts a senior parent meeting in November to share information about financial aid. A representative from the Missouri Department of Higher Education is available to lead you through filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms and applying for scholarships. Look for the date and time of this meeting to be posted in the student bulletin, The Odessan, and on our website.
FAFSA FRENZY!
FAFSA Frenzy helps thousands of Missouri students/families complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid every year. The FAFSA is the primary form used by federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs in determining an individual's eligibility for grants, loans, work-study, and scholarships.
DEAR OHS FAMILIES:
To help you through the FAFSA process, Missouri college access organizations and colleges are hosting FAFSA Completion Week of Action from Sunday, January 19 through Saturday, January 25. These free events provide extra support to help students and families navigate the process. If you have not completed your FAFSA yet, now is the time!
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (January 21-23), 6-8 p.m. CT :

No registration required - join the Zoom link ( https://umsystem.zoom.us/j/93340160567) and you'll be placed in a private room with a financial aid professional who can answer your questions.
Saturday, January 25 :
An in-person FAFSA completion event will be hosted 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the University of Central Missouri (Ward Edwards Building-Room 2810) by the MASFAP Early Awareness Committee, MOCAN, and college financial aid offices - for updates and more information visit www.mofafsa.org/fafsaday.
FSA ID:
An FSA ID serves as your legal signature to submit the FAFSA. The student and the parent will need to create separate FSA IDs at least 3 days prior to submitting the FAFSA. Attached is a help sheet on setting up an FSA ID.
Along with these events and resources listed above, Mrs. Whitaker and Mrs. Ray will be available Jan 21-24 for individual appointments before, during, or after school. Please reach out if you would like to set up a time to meet with either counselor - 816.633.5533.
