WEIGHT CERTIFICATION
This year, we will be following the wrestling weight management program developed by the NWCA, National Wrestling Coaches Association, and the PIAA, Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association. The program was developed in 1997 as a way to promote safe weight management practices. The program is designed to help wrestlers improve performance, minimize injury and illness due to weight loss problems.
All wrestlers are required to participate in the program. The first step involves testing the athlete’s hydration level. This will be done by analyzing a urine specimen. It is extremely important that all wrestlers are well hydrated prior to the test. This can be done the following ways:
24-48 hours prior to the test drink water regularly.
Avoid caffeine and cold medications containing decongestants.
Refrain from very strenuous activity.
If a wrestler’s urine evaluation indicates he is in a dehydrated state, we cannot complete the testing and will have to reschedule for another day
Following hydration testing, we will take several skin fold measurements. These measurements along with the hydration test data will be entered into the NWCA’s software program. The program calculates a safe wrestling weight for the wrestler and tracks the wrestler’s weight throughout the season to determine the amount of weight the person can lose per week.
It is extremely important that both wrestlers and parents understand the value of this program and following the weight loss program. Please encourage good nutrition by having them eat well-balanced meals and drinking plenty of fluids. In order to lose weight properly, simply reduce their calorie intake. Make sure they avoid “junk” foods which have a lot of calories and little nutritional value. Please discourage the use of illegal weight loss practices such as the use of rubber suits and saunas. Encourage them to perform aerobic exercises such as running and biking which will help burn fat.
Your cooperation and support of this program is appreciated. If you have any questions about our “Safe Wrestling Weight” policy please feel free to contact the coaching staff.
