INDIVIDUAL MATCH SCORING The object of the sport of wrestling is to put your opponent on his back -- to pin your opponent. A pin (or fall) is when you put your opponent on his/her back with any part of both shoulders or both shoulder blades of your opponent in contact with the mat for two seconds. When you pin your opponent, the match is over and you are the winner. If nobody gets pinned, the winner is the wrestler who has scored the most points during the match...
There are five ways to score points in a wrestling match:
1) Takedown - (3 points) You score two points for taking your opponent down to the mat and controlling him/her.
2) Escape - (1 point) You score one point for getting away or getting to a neutral position when your opponent has you down on the mat.
3) Reversal - (2 points) You score two points when your opponent has you down on the mat and you come from underneath and gain control of your opponent.
4) Near Fall - (2 or 4 points) You get near fall points when you almost but not quite get your opponent pinned. A near fall (near pin) is when...both shoulders are held for two seconds within four inches of the mat, or one shoulder touches the mat and the other shoulder is at a 45 degree angle coming down to the mat, or the wrestler is held in a high bridge or back on both elbows. If a near fall lasts for two seconds, you get 2 points. If a near fall lasts for 4 seconds, you get 4 points.
5) Penalty Points - (1 or 2 points) Your opponent is awarded points if you commit the following infractions:
A) Stalling-(you get one warning before you are penalized and points are awarded).
B) Incorrect starting position or false start (You get two cautions before points are awarded).
C) Illegal Holds - There are several holds that the referee will penalize you for without warning. (There are other holds called "potentially dangerous holds" which the referee might make you let go of but will not penalize you for)
D) Technical Violations-*Going off the mat or forcing your opponent off the mat to avoid wrestling ("fleeing the mat.") *Grabbing clothing, the mat, or the headgear *Locked or overlapped hands:If you are down on the mat in control of your opponent, you cannot lock or overlap your hands, fingers or arms around your opponent's body or both legs unless you have met criteria for a near pin of your opponent, or your opponent stands up and has all his/her weight on two feet, or you have lifted the opponent off the mat. *Leaving the mat during the match without the referee's permission *Reporting to the mat not properly equipped or not ready to wrestle, or equipment that is detected as being illegal after the match has started. This includes no tape covering shoelaces.
E) Unnecessary roughness
F) Unsportsmanlike conduct
G) Flagrant Misconduct The first and second time you are penalized, your opponent is awarded one point. The third time you are penalized, your opponent is awarded two points. The fourth time you are penalized, you are disqualified. In the event of Flagrant Misconduct, you are ejected from the match on the first offense, you lose the match, and 3 team points are deducted. You are suspended for the next event.
Fall, Forfeit, Default, Disqualification - 6 team points Technical Fall (getting ahead of your opponent by 15 points ends the match) - 5 team points Major Decision (winning the match by 8 - 14 points) - 4 team points Decision (winning the match by fewer than 8 points) - 3 team points In the event of a tie: Criteria for tie breaking of team scores can be found at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4xY7cXy8i0Ca2tIczRtQUhpMmM/view?usp=sharing
OTHER INFORMATION
Injury Time: If the referee feels that you are hurt or you signal that you are hurt, the match will be stopped. You have one minute and 30 seconds to decide to continue to wrestle. If you do not continue or you use all of your time before deciding to continue, you lose by injury default. If you continue and take a second injury time, the injury clock begins from the time remaining after the first timeout. If you do not continue or you use all of your time before deciding to continue, you lose by injury default. At this point, your opponent gets to choose where to restart the match; top, bottom or neutral. If the match is stopped for a 3rd time for injury, the match is over and you lose by injury default.
Recovery Time: If a wrestler is hurt due to an illegal hold, the wrestler is allowed 1 minute and 30 seconds of recovery time. If the wrestler does not return to wrestle as a result of the illegal hold, you would lose by disqualification.
Blood Time: If you are bleeding, the match stops. You have a cumulative time of 5 minutes of blood time. Once the bleeding is stopped, the time is stopped to clean up. There is no limit the amount of stoppages for blood time. If you use all 5 minutes of blood time, the match is over and you lose by injury default.
Regulation Match Time: A high school match consists of 3 periods of 2 minutes each, unless you are in the consolation rounds of a tournament, the matches after your first loss. In a consolation round match, the first period is always 1 minute and the second and third period are 2 minutes.
Overtime Rules: If regulation time ends in a tie, the match goes into overtime. The first period of overtime is 1 minute long and is considered Sudden Victory. The match starts in the neutral position. The match ends on the first point(s) scored. If no points are scored in Sudden Victory, the match goes to 2 -30 second Rideout periods. In the first rideout period, one wrestler chooses top or bottom. Score is kept and wrestling continues for the entire 30 seconds, unless there is a fall. The second wrestler gets choice and wrestling continues for another 30 second period. The match ends at the end of the second Rideout period, if there is no longer a tie. If there is still a tie the match goes to Ultimate Tie Breaker. In Ultimate Tie Breaker, the wrestler that scored the first point in the match gets to choose top or bottom. If no one scored, the disk is flipped to determine choice. The bottom wrestler has 30 seconds to escape. If the bottom wrestler escapes or reverses, the match ends and he/she wins. If the top wrestler, stays on top for the entire period or turns the opponent, he/she wins. A penalty point can also end the match.
Singlet: During any competition, any time you step on the mat you must have a shirt on or your singlet straps on your shoulders. If you take your straps down while you are on the mat or you step on the mat without a shirt or your singlet straps down, the team is penalized one point.
