We wanted to take the time to introduce identity markers in a highly scaffolded manner that will allow us to embed the equity literacy framework in our instruction. It was critical that we discussed identity markers in a safe, respectful, and open way. We wanted students to understand the need to Recognize and Respond to biases that appear around them, whether they appear in students or in adults. Therefore, we included specific strategies and language in our unit that would support students as they respond to issues of bias.
One process we shared with students was the four Agreements for Courageous Conversations. These agreements were used as a guide for our conversations to ensure that everyone involved felt safe, respected, and included.
Another strategy we introduced to students was how to respectfully "call out" or "call in" individuals who demonstrate bias. By doing so, they can not only stop the harmful behavior in that moment, but also educate the offender.
