Here are some sample questions that you can ask your child as they read their non-fiction story,book, or article. Asking questions help them comprehend and reflect on their reading.

Questions:

  1. What topic is your book or article about?

  2. What are some things that you already know about this topic? What are some things you would like to learn about this topic? Before you read- What questions do you have about this topic?

  3. What interesting information did you learn about the topic?

  4. What are some of the text features you see in your nonfiction text (for example, title, heading, pictures, captions, etc.)

  5. Pick a passage to read. What non-fiction text structure is it? (compare and contrast? Descriptive? Order and sequence? Cause and Effect? ) Can you find a text-evidence to support your answer?

  6. What was your favorite part of the text? Why was it your favorite part?

  7. Let's make connections. Does this topic remind you of something that has happened in your life? Something that you already know or heard about? Does this story remind you of another book or movie you have watched?

  8. What new vocabulary words did you learn in the text that you read? What does the word mean? What are some synonyms of the new word you learned? Can you try using this word in a sentence?

  9. Are there any pictures or illustrations? How do the pictures help you understand the topic better?

  10. What is one new thing that you learned in your reading? What is something that you already knew? After reading the text- what new questions do you have about this topic?

  11. Pick a section to read. What is the title of this section? What is the main idea? What are the key details? What were the details that were not as important?

  12. What thoughts, ideas, or opinions do you have about this topic?

  13. What is the author's purpose for writing this book or story? Is it to entertain the reader? Is it to inform the reader about information? Is it to persuade the reader? How do you know?

  14. If you would like to learn more information about this topic, where can you go to learn more?

  15. (After reading a topic) Was there any good writing that you noticed that you also want to use in your non-fiction writing ? For example, did the author use good vocabulary? Did the author do a great job hooking the reader in the beginning?

  16. If you were to recommend this text to someone, who would you recommend it to? Why?
