Here are some sample questions that you can ask your child as they read their fiction story or book. Asking questions help them comprehend and reflect on their reading.

Questions:

  1. Describe the problem that happened in the story. Who is in trouble? Can the problem be easily fixed, or is it complex?

  2. Is there a solution for the problem in the story? How did the problem get resolved?

  3. What is the plot of the story? What happened in the beginning? In the middle of the story? At the end of the story?

  4. Who is the main character in your story? Describe your character. What words describe them? What do they like to do? What are they good at doing? What are their dreams? What does your character dislike?

  5. Who are the other (secondary) characters in your story? How are they related to the main character? What words describe them?

  6. What was your favorite part of the story? Why was it your favorite part?

  7. Let's make connections. Does this story remind you of something that has happened in your life? Does this story remind you of another book or movie you have watched? Do the characters remind you of someone you know?

  8. Who do you think will also enjoy the story or book? Would you recommend this book to a friend or a family member? Why or why not?

  9. What important lessons does the main character or characters learn in this story. Is it a lesson that is important for your life too? Explain.

  10. Do you think this story could happen in real life? Is it realistic? Share your thoughts of why or why not.

  11. If you were to design a book cover for the story you read, what would be on the cover? Why?

  12. What are the important themes in this story? (for example: friendship, working hard, etc). How do you know? Talk about a part in the story that shows this.

  13. What is the author's purpose for writing this book or story? Is it to entertain the reader? Is it to inform the reader about information? Is it to persuade the reader? How do you know?

  14. (After reading a chapter) What was your favorite part of this chapter?

  15. (After reading a chapter) Was there any good writing that you noticed that you also want to use in your writing ? For example, did the author use good vocabulary? Did the author do a great job hooking the reader in the beginning? Did the author have great dialogues in the chapter?

  16. Give an example of "cause and effect" from the story. "Because ____ happened, ______ happened as a result."

  17. Describe the important events that happened in the story. Use transition words such as In the beginning, at first, then, second, lastly, at the end, next, etc.

  18. What part of the story was your least favorite part? Please explain why. If you were the author, how would you change that part?

  19. Who is your favorite character in the story? Why is he / she your favorite character?

  20. What predictions can you make about the characters? About the solution? If the book had a sequel, what do you predict will happen in the sequel?

  21. What is the main setting of this story (time and place)? What are the other settings of this story?
