Who Polluted the River: An Interactive Story- This idea was given to me by Pam Miller from Toronto Eco-Schools. Students listened and then became active members by "polluting" the water (with household ingredients being careful to not actually pollute the water with toxic chemicals). I decided to amplify student voice by adding a padlet to my story so students could answer questions as we read and interacted with the story. See resources for a the actual story.
Let's Talk Science: Building a Water Filter on a Budget -Students had a visit from Let's Talk Science outreach program (University of Ottawa Students). Using the same water that we "polluted" from our interactive story, students built their own water filter using materials that they "purchased" on budget.
Designing Storm Drains- It was Pam Miller from Toronto Eco-Schools who presented at STAO who gave me this great idea and resources. Students used design thinking to investigate why we needed storm drains and then designed their own using a bag of pasta to act as the "pollution". We used pasta so we didn't actually add pollution to the environment. We took it one step further and leveraged digital by incorporating a graph using google sheets.
