NPDL: In order to foster deep learning, we first unpacked the competencies in New Pedagogies for Deep Learning (these are sometimes referred to as the 6 C's of learning).
The competencies that we focused on for this unit were Citizenship and Collaboration. Students examined the progression chart in NPDL and came up with our own student friendly language. This, along with the Ontario Curriculum documents expectations for the Water Systems Unit, allowed us to have a framework in which all our learning was rooted.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Once we focused our deep learning goals, we naturally incorporated the SDGs into our Unit of study. Goal #6 is Clean Water and Sanitation and the students were introduced to the goals by watching videos and then relating their NPDL goal of becoming better global citizens to Clean Water and Sanitation for all.
