Shelby O'Neil: The first article I had students explore was an article about a teenager who started her own non profit organization that aimed at reducing the number of single use plastic straws that were killing marine life. We were able to reach out to Shelby and she agreed to go a Google Hangout with my classes. Students asked questions about how she started her organization and how they could get started with their own action plan. I don't have a picture of our hangout but I do have a link to her wonderful website. See Below. Students followed her progress as she lobbied for action in her own local government.
City of Ottawa Local Stormwater Issues Guest Speaker: To give students real context of how local pollution is affecting our own drinking water, we had a local expert come in from the City of Ottawa to answer questions and give a presentation. Students also asked questions about becoming a City of Ottawa employee; giving students a chance to explore a real career in STEM.
Live Streaming with The Water Brothers: You may have caught an episode of The Water Brothers if you are a TVO fan like I am! Students watched their episode about how Asian Carp are an invasive species to our local Canadian Waters and then were given an opportunity to ask questions. This live stream was made available to all Ontario Schools participating in Water Docs at Schools Action projects. We unfortunately were not able to complete our documentary for Water Docs At School this year due to timing constraints.
