The Parent Portal

The Ottawa Catholic School Board has created a Parent Portal that provides you with important information, both general information and specific information about your child. You will need to register for an account. You may have already done so, in which case you will simply need to login. It can be accessed at the following address: https://www.ocsb.ca/parentportal/

How to use the Student Portal

Accessing the Student Portal

The Student Portal is where students are able to access many of the tech tools used by the ocsb on a frequent basis. Students are shown how to access this, however, if you would like to learn how to access it yourself, or need to provide your child with some "tech support" watch this video, or follow the steps below.

Steps to Accessing the Student Portal

  1. Access the school's website. Our school's website is: http://luk.ocsb.ca/home

  2. Click on the tab at the top that says "Student Portal"

  3. It may ask for you to sign into Google to access it, in which case, you would use your child's ocsbstudent email as well as the password associated with that account. **NOTE: I am able to change your child's password if they have forgotten it!

Accessing and Using Hapara

Accessing and Using Hapara

Hapara is a tool used on a daily basis in our classroom. It is divided into "Workspaces" by subject area as well as strands (ex. Reading, Writing, etc...), and I will place tasks/assignments as well necessary links, resources, and more in this area so they can easily be accessed both at home and at school. You can access it by following the steps below or watching this video

Steps to Accessing Hapara

  1. Access the Student Portal (as indicated above). Make sure that you are logged into chrome under your student's profile (using their ocsbstudent address). You should be able to ensure this is the case by looking at the top right hand corner, and clicking on the image you see there. It should come up as your child's account. If not, ensure they are logged in. You can have multiple profiles on a single computer.

  2. Click on the box that says "Hapara" and is in blue.

  3. You will be taken to the Student Dashboard. At this point, you/your child will be able to move between "Workspaces" (where you will find all necessary assignments/tasks and resources), "To Do" (a list of due dates that have been provided for assignments by the teacher) and "My Files" (files from Google Drive).

A General Overview of Google Drive

Using Google Drive

Your child will be using Google Drive on a regular basis to produce work to be submitted for class. This video is long, but gives a great overview of how to use Google Drive in general. This might be helpful if you/your child is not familiar with the platform. Your child will be given instructions in class on how to use the various tools in Drive, such as Docs, Slides, and Drawings. You can access it through the Student Portal (as shown above)

Accessing and Using Screencastify

One of the tools we will use in our class to share our thinking is Screencastify. Screencastify is an extension that can be added onto the chrome browser, and allows your child to record their screen, a webcam, or audio of themselves depending upon the assignment. This is then saved to their Google Drive for easy sharing.

To access this tool, either follow the steps below or watch the video.

Steps for Accessing Screencastify:

  1. As above, ensure you are logged into your child's account on the chrome browser.

  2. At the top of the browser, you should see a small pink arrow, this is how your child would access Screencastify.

  3. They may need to sign in with Google, in which case, ensure they use their "ocsbstudent" account, and ensure you allow it to access your Google Drive, as well as your camera and microphone on the account they are using

  4. Your child will have the opportunity to record the Browser Tab, their desktop, or the webcam only. Follow the instructions for the task provided by me to determine what needs to be recorded and shared!

Accessing Google Meets

If it is necessary to return to a Distance Learning situation, we will be using Google Meets as a method to connect as a class. Your child will be notified of when these meets will be occurring. To access these meets, you can follow the steps below, or watch the video.

Steps for Accessing a Google Meet

  1. Go to the Student Portal (as indicated above)

  2. Click on the "Meet" Icon

  3. The Meet invitation should show up if the Meet is scheduled for that day.

  4. Click on it and it should take you to the Meet. Your child may need to request to join. If so, I will allow your child to join when I see the request, however, please ensure they are accessing Meets using their ocsbstudent account so I am able to verify their identity.

  5. Generally speaking, students can have their video on when they enter their meet, but should leave their audio off until instructed to turn it on. This is because it can be quite loud if all students are using their microphones at the same time.
