Working to Save the Planet Through Agriculture by Attracting and Sustaining Healthy Pollinators and Habitats at CFES
What stage of the Engineering Design Process are you currently working on? IMPROVE
Unit Driving Questions
How does the disappearance of pollinators affect me, my town, and my local community? What is happening to pollinators and what can I do to help?
Unit Overview
Colham Ferry students participate in the UGA Great Georgia Pollinator Census. Students will analyze data posted on the UGA Census site. Using the data students will discover if any pollinator numbers are decreasing and design solutions to increase the numbers and specific types of pollinators on our school grounds. Students will create Bee Awareness products to sell at a spring Mustang Market and use the proceeds to improve CFES pollinator gardens/habitats.
Teaching and Learning
Ask -Students learned all about pollinators and their needs from experts: Bee Day, Monarch Day, Entomologist Visit - How does the disappearance of pollinators affect me, my town, and my local community? What is happening to pollinators and what can I do to help?
Imagine-Students discovered what we needed on our school grounds to help increase pollinator presence - Pollinator Habitat Walk, The Great Georgia Pollinator Census Count and Data dig. Students discovered most common and least common pollinators at CFES and evaluated any trends in increase or decrease of numbers.
Plan - Visit from Dr. Brett Nolan, entomologist, to share information about local pollinators and native bees. Students researched Native Bees and their needs, began to design a Bee House
Create - Students create Native Bee Houses for solitary bees. These will be placed around CFES to improve our pollinator habitat.
Improve - Bee Expert - entomologist Dr. Nolan will revisit CFES and evaluate/give suggestions for bee houses students have created. Students will also conduct peer evaluations.
