Unit Driving Question

How can we, as environmentalists, take care of our environment?

Kindergarten Environmentalists PBL 2nd Semester 2022

Unit Overview

Students will help imagine how to solve the problem of litter and other items left on our playground. This will help them think on a larger scale of how to keep their environment clean. Students will collect, sort, and count the items from the playgrounds weekly and record this data. This information will be shared to create a plan. Journals will be used to document ideas and design plans for the students to share with our partnerships. Students will learn how to be responsible for their environment and belongings. They will be empowered to share their knowledge in our CFES community so that others will do the same.

Teaching and Learning

  1. Mr. McCullers will create a video for students explaining the problem within our school of litter and lost and found items left on the playground.

  2. Brock Toole from OCS will meet with Kindergarten teachers regarding our CFES greenspaces and sustainability on our school grounds.

  3. Using this overhead view of the CFES playground, students will denote the current locations of trash receptacles and create a plan of where trash receptacles need to be moved/placed on the playground for easier access. Students will record their findings in their STEM journals.

Students will collect litter, equipment, and lost and found items from the CFES playground. The students will sort, count, and graph the items weekly. Data will be recorded by the students in their STEM journals. Students will answer the question “How can we as environmentalists take care of our CFES playground environment?” using a grade level FlipGrid.
