Unit Driving Question
How can we reduce our food waste in our community and educate others about food waste?
Unit Overview
Students will explore the impact of microorganisms on composting and use what they have learned to minimize the excessive food waste in the cafeteria.
Teaching and Learning
Ask:
Hook - Where does our leftover cafeteria food go? What purpose do landfills have?
How can we reduce our food waste in our community and educate others about food waste?
Imagine: (Learning Opportunities)
Think, See, Wonder- Where do Fallen Leaves Go?
Microorganisms and Bread Activity: (Bake bread with and without yeast and make observations. What differences do you notice between the two breads? Why do you think this occurred)?

Composting Project
Students will make predictions of what type of food items from our cafeteria (oranges, apples, bananas, egg shells, etc.) will compost the best, place them outdoors in boxes with soil and moisture, and record observations in their journals over time.
Plan:
Students will make plans for a published book that will teach the school community about our composting efforts
Create:
After a sufficient amount of planning, students will create their semi-final draft for the storyboards of the published book.
Test:
Students who serve as reading buddies will take copies of the draft to their reading buddies in younger grades to share the composting books. These students will note any confusion over the concepts or any unanswered questions their reading buddies have and bring that feedback back to the group.
Improve:
If needed, students will revise certain storyboards, then submit the finalized storyboards to Student Treasures for publishing.
Share:
When the published books arrive, students will share their final publications with the rest of the school community. The books will also be shelved in the school library for future checkouts.
